SHE IS THE OCEAN Wins Best Documentary at the LA Femme International Film Festival
Inna Blokhina, the acclaimed director of the award winning documentary about SURFING ON THE WAVE (with Kelly Slater),won Best Documentary for her second film, SHE IS THE OCEAN, at the LA Femme Awards Gala, Sunday October 14th at the SOUTH PARK Center in Los Angeles. The film examines nine extraordinary women from the four corners of the globe who share one thing in common: a profound love for the Sea. A love so profound that they have chosen to make the Ocean the center of their physical, philosophical and professional lives.
In a unique documentary concept, the director has selected these women, ranging from the ages of twelve to eighty three, in order to create a portrait of what could be a metaphor for one woman's Ocean life through all her ages.
Starting with three women who engage in the thrill of ocean sports, to a famed scientist who plunges into the deepest depths on the edge of human survival, to a cliff diver who is hailed as "The bravest woman in Germany", She is the Ocean captures the common thread that bonds them together. Both how it has formed their lives and given them meaning BEYOND the normal constraints of society.
Mankind has always referred to the Ocean as a She.
Even the boats that sail upon her waters are considered to possess female energy.
Could this be mankind's greatest homage to the female gender? That these Oceans of ours, which contain the most powerful forces on the planet, the most BOUNDLESSmysteries, the progenitor of all life on earth, the vessel of our planet's most infinite and valuable bounty, will forever be related to the same noble attributes of a woman? The attributes of mystery and power which has kept mankind enthralled from time immemorial?
She is the Ocean will explore these thoughts and more. And, in the very words of the women who lead these extraordinary lives, seeks to discover the answers.

«For those three seconds when I'm free-falling, I'm in my own world.» When a single false move can cost your life. When time is slowing down and you are feeling a moment of truth. That is 100% of concentration. That is her world. The world of Anna Bader. Anna became one of the most courageous female high divers and 6-time European Champion in cliff diving. Gymnastics was her first passion, and that's what eventually led her to a springboard at age 13. Wanting to combine her love of gymnastics and water, she thought doing acrobats into a pool was the ideal sport for her. Soon enough, she started participating in competitive diving and continued on this path—making the German national team along the way—for the next seven years. In 2006 Anna participated for the first time at Red Bull Cliff Diving series in Switzerland and already in 2008 completed her highest dive from 24.5 metres in Polignano. Today Anna is a worldwide star and the face of cliff diving. But still she always prefers to listen to her own heart and to be in her own world.
«If I do things, I do because I feel it. I would never jump off the cliff, because somebody says «Go! Go! Jump!». No! I jump because I feel it, because I want. And sometimes actually I don’t feel it, and I go back. I think this is important always listen to your inner voice, and to not get lost in what people expect from you.»
From childhood Keala gained respect from the boys, fighting her fears and conquering the big waves. The professional surfing chooses her; in fact she was born and grew up in Hawaii. Passed a difficult moment she managed to break all the stereotypes of the surf industry, where a woman receives a sponsor of «femininity.» She always has been a girl «in the men's shorts» and never regretted it; spending half of her life in the top five best professional women surfer of the world (ASP World Tour). In 2007 she stops the tour but continued to triumph in her journey. Winning big wave competitions and starting the first contest «Nelscott Big Wave Classic womeof. Eventually Keala became one of the bravest women of the world in surfing. In 2013 she won the Billabong XXL Awards at Chopo`s in a 20-foot wave. A few years earlier Kennelly had a traumatic accident when a wave hit her face to the reef. Took her a while to restored her face after this major facial injury. So fragile, but courageous woman didn`t stop here, she goes for another challenge to be an actress. Roles in the movie «Blue crash» and the TV show «John from Cincinnati» began her first steps into the world of entertainment business.
Today’s Keala is professional also a DJ. Her music inspiration comes from the ocean, the big waves. Keala’s never betrayed her passion. When the time comes to take a decision in between her family and the ocean, she chooses the last one.
Andrea was born in the small island of IIhabela, Brazil. The unconditional love to the ocean starts growing very quickly from her early childhood. Later on following her dream the island of Maui became her home. In 2005, Andrea’s started her SUP career competing in a men's team crossing the Kawaii Channel. After that she became part of the first women's SUP surfing team and won many awards for long distances races. Andrea never stops on her laurels and today she holds the world record of prizes in SUP, surfing and canoeing. For 39 years she has been a real pioneer and world-class professional athlete in water sports.
Also she got titles for surfing one of the biggest waves on the planet — Jaws. Then she became more famous when she was the first female lifeguard on Jet Ski in difficult conditions.
Like the impersonation of the power, Andrea’s is doing everything at the highest level. Combining career a professional paramedic, every day she finds time to devote herself completely to the ocean. Only there is this strong spirit where she feels truly alive. Another passion for Andrea’s is her love for the whales, and they seem to respond in return. In a single voyage between the islands, Andrea accompanies these giant guardians of the oceans.
COCO HO, 23, SUNSET BEACH, HAWAII
It is all in her middle name. Hapaikekoa. Hawaiian for “Carrier of strength”. Since riding her first wave at 7 years old this has been her code. It has had to be. Born Half Hawaiian, but blond and white to Polynesian surfing Royalty. Her father, Michael Ho, a legend in the pantheon of Modern surfing, one of the most accomplished surfers in history, considered a King of the sport. Her uncle, Derek Ho, a world champion, winning his mantle against impossible odds in the heaviest wave in the world, Hawaii’s pride. Her older brother, Mason Ho, a prodigy for the new era of Hawaiian surfing and headed for the stars. Yet remarkably, young Coco Ho refused to be intimidated by one of the most respected legacies in the sport. Instead she decided to become it. By eight years old, a fully sponsored professional, by seventeen winning a place on the international pro tour, by eighteen voted rookie of the year, by twenty years old voted the second most popular female surfer in the world. And today she stands atop the heap of the competition, holding third place in the world rankings with a good chance to take it all and join her family of Hawaiian World Champions. But despite her astonishing success, despite a rocky family background of break-ups and divorce and a single Father house, Coco has somehow retained a great joy in her life, her smile lighting up a room, her surfing exuberant and celebratory. Despite the wounded spirit deep within, her hearts burns with the fire of life. A life of positivity, of hope, of individuality and inspiration for her legion of young followers. Coco Ho, in 23 short years has become more than a professional surfer, she has become the very symbol of what a professional surfer should be, male or female. Envied, loved and encouraged, Coco is a streaming meteor of talent and spirit, whose place in the history books has yet to be written, but who’s impact will undoubtedly never be forgotten.
